Margate Surprise: The first step towards Simon Squibb

Updated: Jan 27

One hot summer afternoon in Margate, as I met with my friend to discuss a new project, I had no idea that I was about to stumble upon a discovery that could give my life a "little bit" new direction.

The original plan was to visit a photo exhibition by Bea Belicza, an award-winning Hungarian journalist. Bea's creativity and dedication have always been incredibly inspiring, so we were particularly excited about this day, looking forward to supporting her and admiring her latest works. However, due to a small mix-up, our day took a different turn. My friend misread the date, and instead of attending the exhibition, we found ourselves in a colorful, eclectic pub in the heart of Margate.

As we stepped into the pub called Fez Margate, it felt like we had entered another world. The air was thick with the past, and every corner seemed to hold a story waiting to be discovered. The walls were adorned with old advertisements, vintage cigarette boxes, and a century-old pheasant trophy that looked as though it had been guarding the secrets of the place for decades. The ceiling was decorated with colorful trinkets, creating a bohemian yet cozy atmosphere where time seemed to stand still, and the past and present danced in perfect harmony. I’ve always been drawn to places like this. Vintage items and antiques, which carry their own stories, have always been close to my heart. If circumstances allowed, I would be a collector myself – my home already boasts old furniture, coal-fired irons, and other treasures from the past. Perhaps that's why I was so captivated by Fez Margate, where every object had its own tale to tell.

The charming lady behind the bar, dressed in retro attire with flawless makeup, only enhanced this feeling. As we ordered our refreshing lemonades, we sat down and began to talk about my current project (in which she is also involved), my dreams, and how they could be brought to life. At one point, my friend turned to me excitedly: "Have you heard of Simon Squibb?" she asked. I had to admit that I hadn't, but she eagerly began to tell me about him. It turns out that Simon Squibb had recently purchased a staircase in London, and he is someone who helps people realize their dreams. My interest was immediately piqued.

As I listened to my friend's story, I increasingly felt that Simon Squibb and I shared a common mission. (of course, in my own tiny, dwarf-like way) My goal is also to help others, inspire them, and encourage collaboration.

As soon as I got home, I looked up Simon Squibb and quickly discovered that he is not only a successful entrepreneur but also someone who deeply believes that by helping others, we help ourselves too.

This encounter in Margate was not just the discovery of a new connection, but it also marked a completely new direction in my life. Over the following weeks, I delved deeper into Simon Squibb’s work and became more convinced that I had to find a way to connect with him and share my dreams with him.

Before we could dive deeper into the conversation about Simon Squibb, however, another unexpected twist occurred. The door opened, and a cheerful ukulele group entered the pub, as if an impromptu band had suddenly appeared on a spontaneous stage. Within moments, they surrounded us, and a lively, spontaneous mini-concert began. The music immediately swept us away, and in no time, we forgot that we were in the middle of exploring Simon Squibb's life. The gentleman sitting next to us greeted us warmly when he heard we were Hungarian, sharing his own memories of Hungary from years ago. As we began to sing along, it felt as though the entire world had shrunk down to this small, bohemian room, where everyone was united in this joyful moment.

This spontaneous ukulele concert was the perfect ending to a special day, made unforgettable by the magical atmosphere of the Fez pub in Margate.

Although we didn't get to discuss Simon Squibb any further at the time, the moment was completed by the musical adventure we were gifted. But, of course, my research didn’t end there. Once I got home, I continued my exploration and uncovered even more interesting facts about Simon Squibb... but more on that in the next post!

Update: The Exhibition Experience

Naturally, we didn't miss Bea's photo exhibition on the actual day. The wait was worth it! Bea, who recently began delving deeper into photography and design, has created stunning images. At the exhibition, we witnessed her talent firsthand, particularly showcased in her "Lido" series.

Her photos are full of life, yet they carry a deep emotional charge, reflecting the artist's unique perspective and creative energy.

One of the most memorable pieces for me was the image of the "Lido" tower, bathed in a radiant sunset, instantly capturing the attention of everyone present.
